I was born and raised in Montana.  I attended Montana State University and then graduated from University of Iowa in Iowa City after marrying David Hess.  We lived in Iowa City just 3 years and then moved on to Cincinnati, OH; Cleveland, OH and Monroe, CT before finally settling in GA in 1989.  We lived in Lilburn for 10 years where our 2 children, Darrien and Dayna, graduated from Parkview HS.  We moved into the Smoke Rise area, Woods of East Gate, in 2000.

I have taught school in 3 states, worked at a publishing company in CT and worked 9 years at Uptons corporate offices before I finally retired.  I have volunteered extensively with my church, Mountain Park United Methodist Church, where I have been a member of every major committee, made 4 mission trips to Honduras, and am active with our Sunday school class.  I was on the founding board of the non-profit Dream House for Medically Fragile Children.  I am a member of the Stone Mountain Woman’s Club.  I am currently co-chair of the International Outreach Community Service Program.  I have been honored by SMWC as Woman of the Year in 2009 and in  2012, David and I were honored as Family of the Year.  I became involved with Side by Side Clubhouse for Brain Injured Adults through SMWC not realizing I would eventually become personally connected after my husband, David, had a brain aneurysm in 2011.  Side by Side was vital in his recovery so I still volunteer when I can.  I have participated in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day/ 60 Mile Walk for 5 years, personally raising over $12,000.  I have also participated in the Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society and Jingle Bell Run/Walk for the Arthritis Foundation.

I enjoy tennis, golf, walking and playing cards. I especially enjoy our 5 grandchildren.  Our son Darrien and daughter-in-law, Mindy have Madeleine, Caitlyn, Amelia and Brayden who recently moved to Milton, GA.  We are blessed to see them often throughout the year.  We are very blessed to have our daughter, Dayna, living in Snellville with her husband, Jon and daughter Elysia.

Working on the Smoke Signal,  I handle the display and classified advertisements.  And, of course, I’ll willingly help out wherever needed.
