Since 2011, Susan Gilbert has served as the Smoke Signal’s recording secretary, community-news liaison to our local Churches and now also the City of Tucker, and she writes a regular column, TechTalk, sharing her fascination with technology.  Professionally, she is Chief Executive Officer of Apogee Interactive, Inc., the company she co-founded with her husband 29 years ago to fulfill their shared passion for energy stewardship, sustainability, and our country’s energy independence.

Trained as a physics teacher, after completing her master’s degree, Susan’s first job was teaching at Lithonia High School. After two years, she moved on to work for an energy-engineering firm, where she trained energy auditors from coast-to-coast and helped launch energy audit programs for businesses across Georgia for the State Energy Office. Over the next 16 years, she led the engineering firm’s sales and marketing, helping take the business from a staff of five in Atlanta to more than 600 employees in 40 offices across the country.

In 1993, she sold her ownership in that business and established the woman-owned business Apogee Interactive, Inc. with the vision of leveraging technology to more effectively deliver actionable energy information to consumers. Today, she leads the company in delivering best-in-class Internet-based energy analysis and data presentment applications to hundreds of North American utility companies. These tools help utilities educate and empower customers to use energy wisely.

Susan earned her B.S. with a major in physics and a minor in mathematics and M.S. degree at the University of Kentucky. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Smoke Rise Country Club, LLC and is active in Smoke Rise Baptist Church where she has been a deacon, finance committee member, and currently communications manager for the Discovery Class.  As an extension of her work with the Church, she is a Trustee of Georgia's Developmental Disabilities Ministries (DDM), a nonprofit, charitable corporation serving adults with developmental disabilities and their families. In Smoke Rise, she also serves on the Kanawha Community Association as a Member at Large responsible for the Block Captains and producing a bi-monthly newsletter for the 240 residents of that close-knit community.

An avid gardener, Susan loves maintaining the botanical garden surrounding her home on a waterfall in the back of Kanawha.
